EIB Global, the development arm of the European Investment Bank, will provide a USD 191 million loan to the Indian government to improve water and sanitation infrastructure in Uttarakhand.
This marks the EIB's first involvement in India's water sector and aligns with the EU’s Global Gateway Investment Agenda. The project aims to serve approx.9,00,000 residents by upgrading systems through real-time monitoring, automatic meter reading, improved plant automation, and expanding access to underserved communities. Over the next five years, the initiative will focus on reducing water leakage, enhancing wastewater treatment, and delivering reliable clean water supply—particularly benefiting poor households.
EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer highlighted the project’s health and social benefits. The effort supports sustainable urban development in a state experiencing rapid growth in agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, while strengthening EU-India development cooperation through critical infrastructure investments.
