A significant milestone was achieved on 29 December, 2025 in CIDCO’s augmentation of Hetawane Water Supply Scheme, with the first tunnel breakthrough at Shaft-4 in Wahal village, marking the first such success in CIDCO’s history.
The breakthrough occurred in Water Tunnel Package-1, which is being executed by Afcons Infrastructure. This package includes an 8.7 km treated water tunnel, with 5.52 km of tunneling work already completed. The ambitious project is designed to meet the increasing water demand of Navi Mumbai’s rapidly developing regions. It involves the construction of a 13.25-km raw water tunnel and a 15.4-km treated water tunnel. Upon completion, CIDCO’s water supply capacity will increase from 120 million litres per day (MLD) to 270 MLD.
Afcons Infrastructure previously set a new national tunneling record by completing 777 mtrs. of tunneling in a single month using the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Flamingo, surpassing their previous record of 714 mtrs.
