The Water Resources Department’s (WRD) new project across the Chapora River in Goa is 50 percent complete and is expected to be commissioned by March 2026.
The new barrage, being constructed at Sal in Bicholim, will provide an additional 250 million litres per day (MLD) of raw water, improving water supply to Goa, especially during summer months. It will help maintain consistent water levels in the Amthane dam, which supplies water to Bardez, Pernem, and parts of Bicholim. Currently, the Assonora water treatment plant relies on Amthane, which often faces shortages.
The barrage will also prevent flooding in Sal village, an issue caused by the narrow gap in the existing structure. Flooding incidents, such as the one in July 2021, will be eliminated once the Rs 300 crore project is completed. The old structure will be demolished after the new one is operational, ensuring smooth water flow during the monsoons.
