After months of delays, the much-anticipated greenfield project in Mohali was finally opened to the public on 22 December, 2025, offering much-needed relief to commuters traveling on Airport Road and nearby areas.
The project, aimed at decongesting Airport Road and providing an alternative route for Delhi-bound traffic heading towards Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, had faced multiple delays this year, missing its initial June and September deadlines. It was further delayed in December due to protests from landowners and farmers’ unions demanding an entry and exit road near the toll plaza, but this issue was resolved after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) agreed to their demand.
The 31-km stretch, developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme, connects IT Chowk near the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport with Kurali-Chandigarh Road. "The Greenfield project will significantly ease traffic flow and provide better connectivity," said an official.
