Hyderabad is set to develop a 140-km water ring main along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply across the city, mirroring the seamless movement enabled by the ORR.
Estimated to cost around Rs 8,000 crore, the project will interconnect all major water sources, including the Godavari, Krishna, Manjeera, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, into a closed-loop transmission system. This design will allow water to be rerouted during pipeline failures, repairs or emergencies, reducing large-scale disruptions. To extend benefits beyond the ORR corridor, a 98-km radial distribution network will link interior areas to the main ring, ensuring equitable supply. With Hyderabad’s daily demand exceeding 600 MGD and the population projected to reach 1.5 crore, the project aims to future-proof the city’s water infrastructure.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has completed the DPR and plans to seek approvals soon. “This interconnection will eliminate zone-specific dependency on a single source and stabilise supply across the city,” a senior official said.
