The Expert Appraisal Committee of the MoEF has recommended that the expansion
plan of Jindal Power's power plant in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh be
cleared.
The recommendation paves the way for the company to go ahead with work at the
site for the 2,400 MW expansion. An investment of Rs 13,410 crore is to be made
in the project which envisages adding four 600 MW units to the existing 1,000 MW
plant. A debt of Rs 10,000 crore has been tied up for the project. The company
aims to commence power generation at its two units by March 2012.
The MoEF had earlier asked the Chhattisgarh Government to take action against
the company for starting construction of the plant at a site that had received
environmental clearance for a 1,000 MW project. It later allowed Jindal to go
ahead with preliminary studies for environmental clearance.
