The Mines and Geology Department of Karnataka has identified 65 locations where studies and exploration for gold and rare earth minerals are underway.
Notable discoveries include large quantities of gold in Koppal and Raichur, with gold found in Amrapur block at 12-14 grams per tonne, significantly higher than typical findings. However, extraction has been delayed as these areas fall under protected forest zones, with forest clearance yet to be obtained. Additionally, lithium has been discovered in Amareshwara, Raichur, making it only the second lithium find in India, after Jammu and Kashmir. Despite this discovery in 2023, no drilling work has been conducted due to the lack of forest clearance.
The exploration process follows a four-stage methodology, with the first two stages of reconnaissance, pitting, and fencing completed in Koppal and Raichur. Officials from both state and Central governments discussed these findings and necessary clearances in a board meeting in November 2025.
