Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Water Efficient Thrissur (WET) project, the state’s first digitally monitored water distribution system at the Thrissur Corporation on 16 June, 2025. The project, implemented under the AMRUT scheme by ULCCS, is designed to provide clean, purified drinking water efficiently to consumers.
The Chief Minister said the state aims to ensure safe drinking water access across all local self-government institutions. Highlighting progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission, he noted that 55 percent of rural households now receive clean water, and full coverage has been achieved in 115 panchayats and nine assembly constituencies. As part of the WET project, 9,000 households in the Ollur zone have already received pipeline connections.
The system sources water from Peechi Dam, treats it, and stores it at Thekkinkadu Maidan, supplying water to 18,500 consumers. The entire process is digitally monitored in real-time, enabling immediate detection of leaks, illegal usage, or supply interruptions. Mayor M.K. Varghese presided over the event, and Revenue Minister K Rajan launched the online billing system.
Plans for WET 2.0 include 4,000 smart meters and online water quality monitoring under AMRUT 2.0.
