The government has announced the discovery of lithium reserves for the first time in India in Jammu and Kashmir.
The exploration was undertaken by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) wherein lithium reserves have been found in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The deposits are expected to contribute to the critical mineral supply chain to meet the country’s growing needs. Lithium is a critical mineral and one of the key components in EV batteries, optical modulators for mobile phones and finds applications in the aerospace industry.
For commercial exploitation of the lithium deposits to begin, the technical, social and economic feasibility studies will be carried out in the area.
Currently, India imports lithium and other minerals like nickel and cobalt.
