The Maharashtra cabinet has given its go-ahead to two key metro projects in the city -- Metro 2, stretching from Dahisar to Mandale near Mankhurd, and Metro 4, from Thane to Wadala.
Earlier, the Dahisar to Mandale route was planned as an underground project. However, looking at the costs involved, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the executing body, has decided to go for an elevated corridor.
This 23.6 km metro project will cost upwards of Rs 10,000 crore. MMRDA claims that the segment covering DN Nagar to Mankhurd could be completed by 2019.
According to a project report prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the estimated cost of the 32 km, Metro 4 line (Wadala-Ghatkopar- Thane- Kasarvadavali) will come to Rs 14,549 crore.
