The Maharashtra government has approved the Rs 526 crore Indrayani River revitalisation project, led by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
Expected to be completed in two years, the project aims to restore the river's health, which has deteriorated due to pollution from drains, industrial waste, and water hyacinths. The revitalisation will focus on water treatment, flood control, and beautification. Key measures include constructing a drainage system for rainwater storage, installing interceptors to divert polluted water, building embankments for flood control, and enhancing riverbanks with green spaces. Flowing through key pilgrimage sites like Alandi and Dehu, the river is crucial for local communities.
Additionally, two sewage treatment plants (40 MLD and 20 MLD) will be established in Chikhali to help improve water quality. This initiative follows the state-level committee's approval in September, signalling a step towards restoring the Indrayani River’s ecological balance.
