The Ministry of Coal launched the 14th round of commercial coal mine auctions in New Delhi, offering 41 coal mines for development on 29 December, 2025.
This round introduces underground coal gasification (UCG) for the first time, with 21 mines identified for UCG potential. The move aims to boost energy security and sustainable coal utilisation. The auction includes a mix of fully and partially explored mines.Out of the 41 mines, 20 have been fully explored, while 21 are partially explored, providing a balanced range of opportunities for investors and developers. This round includes five mines governed by the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 (CMSP) and 36 mines under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR).
Union Minister of Coal, G Kishan Reddy, highlighted the sector’s transformation under the leadership of PM Modi, emphasising the government’s focus on reducing import dependency and enhancing domestic production. He urged industry stakeholders to seize this opportunity to advance India’s energy independence.
