NTPC and Gujarat Power Corporation (GPCL), on 20 March 2010, signed an MoU
for development of 500 MW renewable energy based projects, preferably wind and
solar energy.
The MoU envisages setting up of green-and-clean energy projects at an
investment of Rs 4,000 crore and the coal based project costing around Rs 5,000
crore.
As per the MoU, NTPC is expected to fund the projects while GPCL will assist
in identifying suitable location, clearances from the state government agencies
and power evacuation.
Of 500 MW projects, a 50-MW solar power project is likely to be set up by
NTPC at either Kachchh or Banaskantha district in the state at an investment of
Rs 500 crore. A 250- MW wind power project is likely to come up in Kachchh
district.
Besides, NTPC is keen to set up a 1,000-MW coal based power station at
Khambhat, off Gulf of Cambay in Anand district of Gujarat. In this regards, the
state government is likely to sign an MoU with NTPC soon.
