As many as 7,636 projects worth Rs 1.53 lakh crore have been completed under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) across 100 selected cities till 31 July, 2025, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, informed the Lok Sabha.
Out of a total of 8,063 sanctioned projects worth Rs 1.64 lakh crore, the majority have been executed in sectors including smart mobility, water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), smart governance, energy, and environment, based on Smart City Proposals (SCPs) from States and Union Territories, duly approved by the High Powered Steering Committee. Minister Sahu also highlighted achievements under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U), launched in 2014 to achieve an Open Defecation Free India and improve scientific waste management.
The mission had a total financial outlay of Rs 62,009 crore, including Rs 14,623 crore Central Assistance. Under SBM-U 2.0, launched in October 2021 for five years, the outlay increased to Rs 1.41 lakh crore with Rs 36,465 crore Central Assistance. On urban transport, the Minister said 1,055 km of metro rail is operational across 24 cities. Since June 2024, metro projects worth over Rs one lakh crore have been sanctioned, while the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme supports deployment of 10,000 electric buses with Rs 20,000 crore assistance.
