A peat power plant will be set up in Mamba sector, in Gisagara district of Rwanda. The groundbreaking ceremony for this power plant took place on 9 May, 2017.
Once completed, the new peat power will increase the national energy production capacity by upto 40 percent. It is expected to add 80 MW of electricity on the national grid.
Turkish coal company HAKAN AS along with power company, Quantum Power (HQ Power), and development company, THEMIS, is executing the project.
The peat power plant will be built by EPC contractor worth USD 210 million, with a total project cost of USD 350 million, and is expected to be completed in 36 months.
Quantum Power will operate the plant for 26 years after which it will be transferred to the government of Rwanda.
