The MoEF has told the Maharashtra Government that environmental clearance to
power plants in the Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts will be possible only
after the state carries out a comprehensive carrying capacity analysis. Carrying
capacity analysis is a study of human activities that can be sustained without
any adverse impact on the environment.
Thus, the fate of the power projects of nearly 26,000 MW which entail an
investment of close to Rs 2,00,000 crore, hangs in fire.
The projects include 15,000 MW
Jaitapur nuclear project, 4,000 MW imported coal based ultra mega power
project, 1,600 MW imported coal based project, 1,500 MW gas based project at the
existing site of the Dabhol project, 1,000 MW imported coal based project near
Ranpar, 1,200 MW gas based project at Bhopan, and 1,980 MW imported coal based
project at Ajgaon.
