On 31 January 2014, Nabha Power, an SPV of L&T Power, began commercial operations of Unit-I of its 2 x 700 MW coal-based thermal power plant at Nalash village near Rajpura in Patiala district of Punjab.
Before starting operations the plant was continuously operated for 72 hours at full peak load of 700 MW. Later, the plant underwent two sets of ramp up and ramp down tests which were monitored by experts from Punjab State Power Corporation, Lahmeyer International, and L&T Power.
Unit-I will be synchronised with the national grid to supply power.
On 3 March 2010, the foundation stone was laid by Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister of Punjab, for the greenfield project. On 5 December 2013, Unit-I was dedicated to the people of Punjab.
The estimated cost of the Rajpura Power project is Rs 9,600 crore and will be developed in two phases.
