Ranchi's Jhiri dumping yard is undergoing a major transformation with its legacy waste remediation project.
Since its commencement in 2024, over 6.75 lakh tonne of accumulated waste have been processed, with a goal to clear the entire 33-acre site within 24 months. The project, costing Rs 92 crore, involves scientifically segregating waste into biosoil, refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and inert material. RDF is sent for co-processing, while inert material is used for landfilling in low-lying areas. Initially, progress was slow due to machinery shortages and other delays, but since then, the pace has picked up significantly. The site now operates with over 13 machines, increasing daily processing capacity.
Sushant Gaurav, Municipal Commissioner, acknowledged the delays due to weather and other factors but confirmed the project is now on track. Efforts are also being made to prevent fresh waste from reaching the yard through the establishment of material recovery facilities (MRFs) in the city.
