SAIL is mulling to set up a 1,000 MW coal based power plant and a greenfield
integrated plant with annual capacity of 6 million tpa. The company is in the
process to identify suitable locations for both the projects.
The proposed power project is expected to be pit-headed. Therefore, it is
expected to be set up at a place close to the coal mines. It has approached the
Union Government for allotment of coal block for this purpose. The location of
the power plant is likely to depend on where the coal block is allotted. The
company is in talks with L&T for setting up the power plant.
SAIL is holding discussions with some state governments where it can get land
for the steel plant and the matter is likely to be placed before the its board
soon.
