The Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL) has discovered fresh coal deposits on the outskirts of Godavarikhani town in Telangana’s Ramagundam region.
Preliminary exploration by the company’s Exploration Department revealed reserves of nearly 30 million tonne at a depth of 250 mtrs. near the Sammakka-Sarakka jatara site on the Godavari banks. The deposits occur in two layers, measuring 5.5 mtrs. and three mtrs. in thickness. Officials are assessing mining options, including developing a tunnel from the GDK-I incline mine or adopting high-wall mining technology.
With several existing mines nearing depletion, SCCL has intensified exploration around Godavarikhani, including GDK-5 opencast, OCP-2, and the Adriyala longwall project. Authorities are also considering linking the new reserves with existing mines for smoother extraction.
Coal reserves in Ramagundam were first found in 1959 at Jangaon, where 24 million tonne were identified. Mining began in 1961, and 21 million tonnes have been extracted so far. Presently, production continues at RG-1, RG-2, RG-3, and Adriyala, with the highest output from opencast mines.
