The Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board (GMDW&SB) has partially commissioned the South West Guwahati water supply project, improving access to drinking water in the city's south-western areas.
The Jalukbari reservoir and six distribution metered areas (DMAs) are now operational, directly benefiting around 1,500 households in areas such as Jalukbari, Assam Engineering College vicinity, Sundarbari, and Satmile. These areas will receive treated, piped drinking water, with house service connections (HSC) expected to begin soon. GMDW&SB is also constructing water infrastructure in 19 other DMAs, aimed at benefiting nearly 17,000 more households by the end of the year, including in areas like Boragaon, Fatashil Ambari, and Dhirenpara. Despite these improvements, some localities still lack reliable access to potable water.
GMDW&SB highlighted that the project represents a significant step in enhancing urban water infrastructure, improving public health, and elevating the quality of life for Guwahati residents.
