Uttar Pradesh has set a target to safely reuse 50 percent of its wastewater by 2030 and achieve 100 percent reuse by 2035, as part of a broader push towards water security and sustainable development.
The treated wastewater will be used across industries, agriculture, municipal needs and other non-potable purposes, helping reduce dependence on groundwater and easing pressure on natural water resources. The state government has put in place a comprehensive policy, phased action plan and implementation framework to meet these goals.
Under the first phase, areas with existing sewage treatment and collection systems will focus on reusing half of the wastewater by 2030. In Phase II (2030–2035), existing facilities will be expanded to achieve 100% wastewater reuse, while Phase III (by 2045) will develop new treatment and collection systems gradually to reach full reuse. Officials said wastewater will be treated as an economic resource rather than a burden, creating long-term environmental and economic benefits. Joginder Singh of the State Clean Ganga Mission said, “The primary objective of this policy is to reduce pressure on water resources and ensure sustainable development.”
