On 31 January 2014, Unit-I of the Rajpura thermal power project in Punjab has commenced commercial operation.
Unit-I of the coal-based thermal power project at Village Nalash near Rajpura in Patiala district of Punjab has 700 MW capacity. This unit was inaugurated by Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister of Punjab, on 8 December, 2013.
The entire project is being developed by Nabha Power in two phases, with an investment of Rs 9,600 crore. Each phase possesses a capacity of 700 MW.
Unit-I of the project was set up with the latest super-critical technology. It was tested at full load of 700 MW continuously for 72 hours without any interruption, and thereafter, it underwent two sets of ramp up and ramp down tests before being granted commercial operation status by engineers.
Unit-II of the project is likely to be commissioned by March 2014.
