France based cement manufacturer Vicat has acquired 51 per cent equity in
Bharathi Cement Company. The acquisition is likely to aid Vicat to tap the
southern markets in India.
As per sources, Bharathi in October 2009 commissioned a 2.5 million tonne
capacity plant in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh’s with an investment of Rs
700 crore as part of Phase I. The Phase II expansion, with an additional
investment of Rs 720 crore for another 2.5 million tonne capacity will be
completed by December 2010.
Earlier, the company has partnered with Sagar Cements to set up a cement unit
at Gulbarga in Karnataka with a 5.5 million tonne capacity on two clinker
production lines, each with a daily capacity of 6,000 tonne. The first line of
production, with an annual capacity of 2.75 million tpa is likely to be
commissioned in 2012.
