Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has announced that the new water treatment plant in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka will start operations by December 2025.
Initially, 25 million gallons per day (MGD) of capacity will be commissioned, while the full capacity of 50 MGD will be operational later. The treated water will also reach Bawana through the Munak canal. Water Minister Parvesh Verma emphasized reducing leakages and losses to improve availability.
Currently, Delhi’s nine water treatment plants and multiple tubewells supply nearly 1,000 MGD, though the city’s demand is around 1,250 MGD. Nearly half of the water remains unaccounted for due to leakages, and non-metred connections. Addressing these inefficiencies is a priority, with measures such as replacing old pipelines, covering canals with solar panels to minimize evaporation, and using pipelines for raw water supply.
Additionally, the Delhi government is planning new treatment plants at Iradat Nagar near Narela, Najafgarh, and Chhatarpur to meet the capital’s rising water needs.
