The government of Kenya has commenced construction of an ultra-modern stadium in Mombasa. The field will be used for hosting local, national and international matches.

The Mombasa County Stadium, estimated to cost USD 16 million, was scheduled for construction in 2018, but experienced delays because the county sports council wanted to include facilities for other sports, and not just football.

The county intends to completely pull down the dilapidated facility and erect a new one that meets international benchmarks. The sports facility will have a capacity of 12,500 to accommodate football fans and international rugby matches. Upon completion, it will have an official FIFA standard 11-aside Astro-Turf pitch.

The project will also include 25×50 mtr swimming pool. Alongside the stadium, an indoor sports arena with a capacity of 1,200 will also be constructed. The project is expected to be completed in 14 months.

Other facilities will include mosque, modern changing rooms and media centre fitted with VAR computers and conventional centre that will accommodate about 3,000 visitors.
