The Madurai Corporation is set to embark on a major riverfront development project along the Vaigai River, with a total investment of Rs 76 crore, under the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services (TNUIFSL) scheme.
The project aims to improve ecological conditions and create public recreational spaces. The development will focus on the 12-km stretch of the Vaigai River that flows through the city, with a primary emphasis on enhancing urban green spaces. Administrative approval for the project was granted through a Government Order issued by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department on 04 February, 2026. The project will be implemented under the TNUIFSL-KfW Tranche III programme. The tender for the project is expected to be released in the first week of March.
Key elements of the development include the creation of parks, a major riverfront park at Kochadai with amenities like walking tracks, food courts, yoga spaces, and an amphitheater, along with a viewing gallery for the annual ‘Azhagar’ festival.
