Maharashtra has become the first state to join the Centre's nuclear power generation initiative, as announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company (Mahagenco) and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), marking a landmark partnership between a state-run utility and NPCIL. CM Fadnavis emphasised the importance of clean, uninterrupted power for India's economic growth and its 2047 development goals, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision for a self-reliant, clean energy-enabled power sector.

Maharashtra's involvement will help meet the growing energy demands, especially from data centres, which account for 50-60 percent of India's capacity. The state will also benefit from the nuclear power expansion in India, with a pipeline of new reactors and Rs 20,000 crore allocated for small modular reactors.
