The Maharashtra government has initiated a pre-feasibility study for a proposed greenfield airport near the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar district.

The study, expected to conclude within six to nine months, is being conducted by a joint venture between Grant Thornton and Nippon Koei India, which recently won the bid from Maharashtra Airport Development Company. A site visit has already been completed, and work is underway.

The Vadhavan Airport is part of a larger plan to develop the region into a major multimodal logistics hub. Once operational, it will complement the Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai International Airport, significantly boosting air connectivity and cargo transport in Maharashtra. The airport will be integrated with the deep-draft all-weather Vadhavan Port, which is positioned on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

The port is expected to enhance India’s container handling capacity by 23.2 million TEUs. Combined with planned road, rail, and warehousing infrastructure, the development aims to strengthen India’s global maritime and logistics footprint.
