The Telangana State Cabinet has approved the creation of a third power distribution company (discom) to complement the existing Northern and Southern discoms.

The new entity will manage all agricultural connections, lift irrigation schemes, Mission Bhagiratha, safe drinking water projects, and Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board power connections. Industries and IT Minister D Sridhar Babu emphasised that there are no plans to raise power tariffs, and no discom has requested revisions. The Cabinet also approved a 10-year power roadmap focusing on renewable energy and storagebased sources to meet rising demand.

This includes tenders for 3,000 MW of solar power and 2,000 MW of pumped storage power under five-year agreements. Companies can establish up to 10,000 MW of pumped storage plants statewide, with land and water allocation provided by the government. Additionally, industries can generate unlimited captive power under the clean and green energy policy, and an 800 MW thermal unit at Ramagundam will be constructed, with further NTPC-backed expansion being evaluated.
