The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has inaugurated a sports injury and rehabilitation centre at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, making it the first civic-run hospital in Mumbai to offer comprehensive sports injury treatment under one roof.

The new facility is equipped with advanced rehabilitation infrastructure, including underwater and zero-gravity treadmills that reduce joint stress while enabling early movement during recovery. It also features digital systems such as D-Wall and Walker View to analyse posture, balance and gait for customised physiotherapy programmes. A wide range of therapies, including shockwave, ultrasonic, Tecar, ice and heat therapy, are available to support faster and safer recovery. To cater to athletes needing prolonged care, a dedicated 20-bed inpatient ward has been created.

The centre will function as a multidisciplinary sports medicine unit, bringing together orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, psychiatrists and dieticians. “This initiative will help athletes return to sport safely and strengthen KEM Hospital’s role at the national level,” said municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
