The Central government has approved the construction of a fourth rail line between Asangaon and Kasara, a key step in improving the Mumbai–Nashik rail corridor.

This new line will be part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3B package, with an estimated cost of Rs 871 crore, to be shared equally between the Centre and the state government. The addition of the fourth line is expected to alleviate congestion by creating dedicated corridors for suburban locals, mail, express, and freight trains. Central Railway (CR) officials said the move will allow for more local train services and smoother operation of long-distance trains.

The project covers a 35-km stretch, with construction already underway on the Kalyan–Asangaon section, while land acquisition for the Asangaon–Kasara stretch is in progress. This expansion will ensure better efficiency and service for passengers, while the new line is expected to significantly improve the suburban rail network in the region.
