The Delhi government has launched a plan to strengthen the capital’s drinking water infrastructure, including the laying of nearly 7,000 km of new pipelines over the next two to three years.

Water Minister Parvesh Verma told the Delhi Legislative Assembly that the initiative aims to ensure safe and adequate drinking water for every household. He said projects worth Rs 7,212 crore have already been launched in the past 11 months, covering water supply, treatment and distribution, as part of a broader push to fix long-standing gaps in the sector. The Minister said the government is working closely with the Centres.

To boost water availability, Delhi is in talks with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to source additional raw water in exchange for treated wastewater for irrigation, a move that could add over 100 MGD to supply. Highlighting leakage control, Minister Verma said, “We have initiated a plan to bring these losses down to around 5 per cent within the next two years.”
