The Gujarat government has approved the construction of a new Rs 974 crore barrage on the Tapi River, near Rundh Bhatha village.

The project aims to address Surat’s water needs by creating a freshwater reservoir and preventing tidal water intrusion that causes soil salinity. Once completed, the barrage will supply 19.60 million cubic mtrs. of drinking water to the city. The Union government will contribute Rs 584.06 crore, with the state and Surat Municipal Corporation covering Rs 389.38 crore. The structure will span 1,035 mtrs. and rise five mtrs., with final designs still pending.

Additionally, a lift irrigation scheme costing Rs 120 crore will provide irrigation to 2,365 hectares in 15 villages across Olpad and Choryasi talukas, enhancing local agriculture. "The barrage will provide much-needed potable water and help local farmers with irrigation," said an official. Construction work  is set to begin soon.
