Bharat Net on track to digitally connect Rural India

National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) or Bharat Net is an ambitious initiative by the NDA government to fully connect all Gram Panchayats in the country through optical fibre cable (OFC) by bridging the connectivity gap between gram panchayats and Blocks for providing broadband.

The Digital India programme will help connect people, inform, educate, spread awareness and lead to higher investment, increased job creation and ultimately raising the standard of living of people.

The project, launched in 2012, is being developed in two phases. Under Phase-1, broadband infrastructure will be made available to over one lakh gram panchayats across the country. Under Bharat Net Phase-2, 1.5 lakh additional gram panchayats will be connected by NOFN.

Phase-1 is expected to be completed by December 2017, while Phase-2 just being launched, will be completed by March 2019.
