Tata Steel has received Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) approval from MoEF for its project related works at Industrial Park near Gopalpur SEZ in Ganjam district of south Orissa.
MoEF has accorded approval for sea water intake and brine discharge from 1.2 million gallon daily (MGD) desalination plant proposed at the site for the Tata Steel's 4,00,000 tpa rebar mill and 55,000 tpa high carbon ferro-chrome plant at Gopalpur SEZ. It has already received environmental clearance from MoEF in 2012 for the purpose. Further, the Tata Steel which is going to invest Rs 1,000 crore is likely to invite other investors to set up high carbon ferrochrome plant. Currently, the preliminary work is underway and equipments like heat exchanger, bag filter, and defuser have been procured. Work on the project is expected to commence by April 2013. The Industrial Park is expected to attract the investments to the tune of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 crore.
Of the total 3,200 acre, around 2,800 acre has been acquired in 1990s by Tata Steel for setting up of a mega steel plant. But the project was shelved and it planned to set up Industrial Park. Initially, Tata Steel will commence work on 400 acre, as the entire land has not transferred in its name.
The company will step up efforts to invite other investors to set up projects in the Industrial Park after getting the lands transferred in the name of Tata Steel and approval of permanent SEZ (Special Economic Zone) status for the complex, which has already received in-principle approval from the Central Government.
