NTPC has warned Technopromexport (TPE),
the Russian power equipment supplier, of legal action if the latter does not
resume work by 24 September 2008 at the 3x660 MW Barh power project (Stage I) in
Patna district of Bihar.
The work at the proposed project has
currently come to a standstill and is now running two years behind schedule,
owing to the dispute between NTPC and TPE. Unit 1 of the project was to be
commissioned by March 2009, but it has now been re-scheduled for January 2011,
while remaining two units are also delayed by over two years. Material supply
for the first unit is almost complete but erection work is yet to begin.
NTPC has already spent about Rs.3,000
crore on the project, whose total cost is estimated at Rs 8,700 crore.
