Metrowater has informed city residents that the Rs 2,500-crore ring main project will address Chennai’s water needs, and is crucial to ensure equitable water distribution, especially as the city's demand is projected to reach 3,253 MLD by 2057.
In the first public consultation, officials explained that the project aims to increase water distribution systems from 48 to 84, ensuring equal distribution citywide. Akilandeshwari, Superintending Engineer of the Planning and Design Department at Metrowater, emphasised the project's importance: "With the current network, equal distribution won't be possible. If one distribution network fails, with the ring main, we can send water through other distribution systems."
The plan includes 115 km of transmission lines, with Rs 395 crore allocated for road restoration. Metrowater also assured the public that they will provide updates on road cuts and diversions via their website and social media. The project has been submitted for Asian Development Bank's (ADB) funding approval.
