Kurseong is set for a major upgrade in civic infrastructure as the foundation stone was laid on 22 November, 2025 for a Rs 100.99-crore initiative, at Monteviot Ground by Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) Chief Executive Anit Thapa.
The launch of the AMRUT 2.0 water supply and strengthening project, jointly funded by the Centre, the state and the municipality, is aimed at resolving the town’s longstanding drinking water shortage. The project will introduce household metering and ensure a steady piped water supply, with completion targeted within 30 months, by 2026–27. Officials say the initiative will mark “a transformative shift in the town’s basic civic infrastructure.” The Balason River will become the primary water source, serving all 20 municipal wards and benefiting around 42,446 residents.
Key components include an 18.5 MLD collector system, 11 strategically located distribution reservoirs, and nearly 94 km of new gravity-fed pipelines. A smart water management system will monitor flow, pressure and consumption in real time. The project replaces ageing, leak-prone systems and addresses severe dryseason shortages caused by scattered natural sources.
