Indian Railways has successfully completed the electrification of the Tinsukia–Dibrugarh and Makum–Ledo rail sections in Upper Assam, marking a major milestone in improving rail infrastructure in the region.
This electrification will enable the operation of electric locomotives, reducing reliance on diesel engines and leading to cleaner, faster, and more energy-efficient train services. The Tinsukia–Dibrugarh section is crucial for both passenger and freight movement, while the Makum–Ledo line, supporting coal transport, holds strategic importance. Railway authorities emphasised that this move aligns with Indian Railways' goal of achieving 100 percent electrification and becoming a net-zero carbon emitter.
The electrification will improve operational efficiency, reduce fuel costs, and boost reliability. The initiative is also expected to benefit local industries, tea gardens, and businesses by speeding up freight movement. Successful trial runs of electric locomotives signal that full-scale commercial operations are set to begin soon.
