India's first hydrogen-powered train is nearing commissioning, with plans for a pilot run on the Jind–Sonipat section in Haryana.
The project, initiated by Northern Railway, has successfully secured an uninterrupted 11 kV power supply for the hydrogen production plant at Jind. The plant, which has a storage capacity of 3,000 kg, is in its final stages of commissioning and produces hydrogen through electrolysis, a key process for green hydrogen generation. The train’s manufacturing has been completed, and it is now ready for operational testing. Haryana's Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi emphasised the need for regular reviews of the power supply system to ensure smooth operations.
The hydrogen-powered train project is part of Indian Railways’ pilot initiative to explore the use of green hydrogen technology for sustainable transportation. The move aligns with India's goals of reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy solutions for public transport.
