Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the State Assembly that the Metro rail projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode are progressing as per the 2017 Metro Rail Policy.
Both projects will be exceuted by Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL). In Thiruvananthapuram, early-stage work has begun with the construction of the Sreekaryam flyover. KMRL has submitted multiple alignment options, and a Secretary-level Committee, led by the Chief Secretary, will finalise the most commuterfriendly route. A comprehensive mobility plan and alternative analysis report have also been submitted and are under review by the state government. Once approved, the detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared.
In Kozhikode, the project is still in the planning phase, with DPR preparation set to follow under KMRL's direction and in line with national guidelines. The CM also stated that the second phase of Kochi Metro, stretching 11.2 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad Infopark, is under construction, but no further expansion is planned at present.
