Approx. 75 percent of the land required for the eight-km Viraganoor Ring Road to Sakkudi Road project in Madurai has been acquired, marking a key milestone in the region's infrastructure development.
The road, which will run along the northern bank of the Vaigai River, is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 130 crore. The Tamil Nadu government had earlier issued a Government Order for land acquisition across five villages, including Vandiyur, Andarkottam, Sakkimangalam, and Sakkudi. While 75 percent of the land acquisition is complete, the compensation to landowners is still pending.
A senior official from the state highways department stated, “The government has allocated ?55 crore for the acquisition.” The department is now waiting for approval of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) before calling for tenders. Once administrative and technical sanctions are received, construction will begin, starting from the outer road at Vandiyur and extending up to Sakkudi.
