Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), a Chhattisgarh-based arm of Vedanta Aluminium, has commenced production from India’s largest 525 kilo Ampere (kA) aluminium smelter.
This new smelting potline, with a capacity of 0.435 million tonne per annum (MTPA), raises Balco’s total aluminium production capacity to one MTPA, placing it among an elite group of global producers. The breakthrough surpasses the previous national benchmark of 378 kA, marking a new era in efficiency and operational scale. The expansion aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and aims to support domestic sectors such as defence, aerospace, construction, and power transmission.
With the ramp-up, BALCO is set to contribute over 20 percent of the country’s aluminium output. The development also propels the Chhattisgarh government’s aluminium park project in Korba, expected to strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem significantly.
