Bengal Aerotropolis Projects (BAPL) is likely to begin construction work at
the airport under the Phase I of the aerotropolis project at Durgapur in West
Bengal, by April 2010. The airport is slated to be operational by December 2011.
Airline companies are likely to be approached for services after the
commencement of the construction work. Changi Airport International, the 26 per
cent equity partner and technical support provider at the project, is expected
to do the route planning for the airport.
The Phase II of development at the project, which is to include setting up of
a science and technology park, electronics hardware manufacturing unit, biotech
facility and residential complexes, is expected to begin after the airport is
operational.
The proposed project on 3,500 acre entailing an investment of Rs 10,000 crore
is likely to be completed over a period of five- to seven-years.
