Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) aims to boost its refining capacity at the Visakh Refinery in Andhra Pradesh from the current 15 million tonne per annum to 18 MTPA over the next three to four years. “We achieved 15 MMTPA last year, this year our target is 16 MMTPA. In the next 3-4 years our target is to increase it to 18 MMTPA,” said R Ramakrishnan, Executive Director-Operations at HPCL Visakh Refinery.
This capacity expansion is part of HPCL’s broader strategy to meet growing domestic fuel demand and enhance energy security. The company has already ramped up operations and is optimising its newly commissioned units post-modernization. The Rs 26,264 crore Visakh Refinery Modernization Project (VRMP), which was launched to upgrade the facility and boost production, has reached key milestones with several units commissioned and integration underway.
The expansion also aims to improve fuel quality, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce emissions in line with India’s clean energy goals. Once fully operational at 18 MMTPA, the refinery will contribute significantly to HPCL’s overall refining portfolio and the national energy matrix.
