The Himachal Pradesh government has started land acquisition process for the Thana Plaun hydroelectric project in Mandi district.
In a preliminary notification issued recently, the state government has stated that 250 bighas of private land is to be acquired for the 191 MW project. It has also authorised the land acquisition collector to survey the land before the acquisition starts.
Private land for the project will be acquired in 21 villages of 12 gram panchayats which fall in Kotli, Sadar Mandi, Jogindernagar and Padhar tehsils. It includes the construction of the 106 mtrs. high gravity dam, which will have a full reservoir level of 716 mtrs. The powerhouse will comprise three power generating units of 50.33 MW each, and two other units of 20 MW each to enable the production of 191 MW of electricity.
The project is proposed to be built at the confluence of Beas river and Rana Khad near Thana village. It will be built by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation (HPPCL). Its project cost was estimated to be Rs 2,223 crore, as per a 2018 report.
The project was conceived in 2009, and has been delayed ever since. A similar land acquisition notification was also issued in 2021.
