In a major push to expand renewable energy and ensure round-the-clock electricity, the Tripura government has identified 10 river sites to generate 185 MW of power using hydrokinetic turbine technology.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the plan on January 3 while addressing the 'bhoomi pujan' ceremony of the Super ECBC building in Agartala. He said the initiative aims to harness flowing rivers to meet rising electricity demand, which has grown with the number of consumers increasing from 7.21 lakh before 2018 to 10.57 lakh today. Tripura currently supplies power for nearly 24 hours daily, with peak demand at 378 MW, projected to reach 650 MW by 2031. The identified rivers include Chakmaghat, Maharani, Dumboor and Feni, with work expected to begin next month.
Minister Nath also highlighted solar initiatives under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and installations in government buildings. “The aim is to adopt new technologies, reduce dependence on depleting gas resources, and ensure sustainable power generation,” he said.
