Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) has commissioned a new 250-tonne basic oxygen furnace (BoF) at its integrated steel plant in Angul, Odisha, adding three million tonne per annum (MTPA) to its crude steel production capacity.
With this commissioning, the plant’s total crude steel capacity has increased from six MTPA to nine MTPA. The new BoF, which converts molten iron into steel using oxygen, is part of the company’s ongoing Rs 20,000 crore expansion project aimed at scaling up the Angul facility to 12 MTPA. This will make it one of India’s largest single-location steel manufacturing units.
Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel, confirmed that the first heat from the newly installed converter has been successfully tapped, calling it a major milestone in the company’s capacity-building journey with a focus on downstream product diversification. The commissioning aligns with JSPL’s strategic push to meet rising domestic demand and reinforce its position in the steel sector.
