Jindal Power may have to push its proposal to expand capacity by 2,400 MW at
its Tamnar project in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh on the backburner, as it
is yet to receive clearance from the MoEF.
Currently, the company has a 1,000 MW capacity at the site. It had proposed
to set up a 4 x 600 MW coal based power plant at Tamnar in March 2009.
While the company was asked to submit an environment impact assessment study
to the State Pollution Control Board for State of Chhattisgarh, Jindal Power,
without waiting for the approval from the state government, started constructing
its new plant at the same site where the 1,000 MW unit was operational.
An inspection team comprising members of the Chhattisgarh Environment
Conservation Board, Central Pollution Control board and the MoEF has now stopped
work at the site.
The MoEF has withdrawn the terms of reference for the project, saying the
required land for such a large project was not available at the site, according
to sources.
In April 2010, the company had raised Rs 10,000 crore from a consortium of 23
banks. It had also placed orders with BHEL for supply, erection and
commissioning of the 4X600 MW boiler turbine generation package.
